Monday, July 2, 2007

Performances by Sir Elton John and the English National Ballet featured in the Concert for Diana, held in Wembley Stadium, London on Sunday to commemorate the late Diana, Princess of Wales life on what would have been her 46th birthday.

As a result of the terror attacks in the United Kingdom on the days prior to the event, heightened security precautions were in force, with a high police presence around the venue, and bag searches taking place. Despite the security fears, over 63,000 attended the concert. It was televised to 120 countries around the world, with a potential audience of 500 million.

The concert, broadcast by the BBC, featured acts from many groups and individuals including Sir Elton John, and the English National Ballet. It was hosted by Princes William and Harry and opened and closed by Sir Elton John, who is remembered for having played a unique rendition of Candle in the Wind at the Princess’ funeral.

Performances were interspersed with tributes from various public figures including Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa. Films showing parts of Diana’s life, with testimony from those who worked with her, were also aired, publicising the Princess’ work around the world, which was to be supported by profits from the concert.

Feud between CNBC and The Daily Show continues to escalate

Thursday, March 23rd, 2017

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Jim Cramer, CNBC’s host of Mad Money, plans to appear on The Daily Show Thursday, in the midst of an escalating feud between Cramer and the Comedy Central show’s host, Jon Stewart.

Jim Cramer has been the only CNBC employee to publicly respond to Daily Show segments strongly criticizing the television business news channel’s financial coverage during the growing global recession, particularly focusing on specific remarks by made by Cramer.

The feud began on March 4, when The Daily Show aired an eight-minute clip lampooning CNBC. The comedy news show featured several clips of pundits, focusing particularly on predictions or reports by CNBC reporters that The Daily Show argued were overly optimistic or too strongly slanted in favor of the companies being discussed.

In one clip, a CNBC host reported Merrill Lynch said it would not need capital, which The Daily Show followed with a list of billions in bailout money the financial services firm has required since September. In another clip, Jim Cramer is shown allegedly affirming “Your money is safe in Bear Sterns”, followed by a Daily Show statement that the global investment bank went under six days later.

“If I’d only followed CNBC’s advice, I’d have a million dollars today,” Stewart said during the bit, “provided I’d started with a hundred million dollars.”

Although most CNBC reporters and executives declined to comment, Cramer defended himself in a column published Monday, claiming the clip was taken out of context. Cramer said he wasn’t talking about buying Bear Sterns stock, but simply reassuring a viewer that his liquidity held in Bear Sterns was safe.

“The absurdity astounds me,” Cramer said of the Daily Show bit. “The fact that I was right rankles me even more.”

Later that day, The Daily Show responded with another montage of clips, this time more specifically targeting Cramer.

“So Jim Cramer, I apologize,” Stewart said ironically, then promptly showcased video of Cramer suggesting the safety of Bear Stearns stock 5 days prior to the collapse of Bear Stearns on Mad Money’s Lighting Round. Provokingly, Jon Stewart then admitted, “He’s not saying literally ‘I’m asking you to buy Bear Stearns,’ for that you have to go back a full 7 weeks” this time showing video footage of Cramer on January 24, 2008, telling TheStreet.com TV viewers to specifically “buy Bear Stearns” stock 7 weeks before it collapsed.

The following day on March 10, Cramer responded again during a Tuesday appearance on the Today show, saying, “[Jon Stewart] is a comedian, and he’s decided to focus on some calls I made during a bull market. The guy is a comedian. Did I make a mistake? First of all, any time you recommend a stock and it goes down, you’ve made a mistake. Here’s a shocker: Almost every stock is down! Any stock you recommended is bad. You know, Warren Buffett, I could run tapes from him, he would look like a complete fool.”

The feud between The Daily Show and CNBC generated a significant amount of attention in the mainstream media. The Associated Press called the first Daily Show bit a “brutal takedown” of CNBC. Other publications, like New York magazine, defended CNBC, writing, “We doubt there’s a single news outlet that hasn’t made a misstatement regarding the economy in the past year.”

The Thursday Daily Show sketch ran the same day CNBC reporter Rick Santelli was scheduled to appear on the show, to discuss his vocal criticisms of President Barack Obama’s plans for dealing with foreclosures. Santelli cancelled the appearance, but Daily Show executives said the CNBC montage was not retaliatory and that they planned to show it before the cancellation was announced.

The International Freight Sector Supporting Sweden’s Free Trade}

Tuesday, March 21st, 2017

Submitted by: Stephen Willis

Sweden is a staunch advocate of free trade and this is enshrined in Sweden’s liberal trade policies. The whole concept of free international trade is at the heart of Sweden’s economic policies and its roots were established as much as a thousand years ago. Sweden is not blessed with a terrain or climate that is good for agriculture and this led to Sweden starting to import from Russia and South East Europe as long ago as the 11th century. It is strange to think that even at that time and long before the phrase was invented, Sweden was engaged in freight forwarding!

The long tradition of international trade has continued to evolve since that time and a thriving international freight sector has sprung up to service the needs of both importers and exporters.

Both the imports and exports from Sweden are now at a high level. Sweden has a very strong export sector and has made large surpluses on its trade for the last decade. The largest single export category is machinery and equipment, making up a third of all exports from Sweden. This has evolved directly from the important iron ore industry that began to be formed in Sweden as early as the seventeenth century. After machinery and equipment, the next most important exports are motor vehicles, paper products, chemicals, iron and steel products and pulp and wood. The vast majority of these exports are bulky items and some, such as chemicals, require freight forwarders to pay especially close attention to their safe freight transport. So the shipping companies that service Sweden’s exporters are highly experienced and have developed systems to ensure that every load is transported safely and securely.

Nearly 60% of all Swedish exports go to other countries in Europe. Of these, Germany is the most important, accounting for a share of 11%, followed by the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States of America, which account for 9% each. Stockholm Airport is an important freight forwarding hub for the transport of goods overseas and especially to the United States, although shipping by sea is also used extensively.

Of slightly less importance as trade partners are the neighbouring countries of Denmark and Finland, accounting for 6% and 5% of Swedish exports respectively. Trade with Denmark is now made easier since the creation of the Oresunde Bridge, which spans the kilometres of water separating the two countries. Freight forwarders have been able to trim journey times and costs since the bridge was opened.

Although much of Sweden’s exports are raw materials and resources such as pulp, wood and iron ore, Sweden also exports branded products. Some Swedish export brands are incredibly well known right across the globe. Indeed, there surely cannot be many people who have not heard of household names such as Ericsson, Volvo, Saab, Electrolux or IKEA.

European countries also account for the majority of the imports into Sweden. The main imports are chemicals, clothing, foodstuffs, motor vehicles, iron and steel, machinery, petroleum and petroleum products.

Indeed, nearly 70% of all imports to Sweden come from within the European Union, with the most significant amount coming from Germany, United Kingdom, France and Norway. The United Kingdom is single-handedly responsible for 10% of all of Sweden’s imports.

This steady stream of international trade between Sweden and the United Kingdom has spawned the development of an effective infrastructure for international freight between the two countries, with a number of freight forwarders having established expertise and robust systems, so that the whole process of the freight transport of goods can be relied upon to be speedy and trouble free.

In recent years, freight forwarders have started making increasing use of IT and technology to make the systems still more streamlined and customer-focussed and freight forwarding between the UK and Sweden is at the forefront of this trend.

Sweden has a long and illustrious history of international trade and the freight services sector is now embracing modern technology to ensure that it has a bright future too. The economy in Sweden is robust and has been less rocked than most other countries by the current period ofeconomic turbulence. The freight company or shipping company involved in Swedish international freight can face the future with confidence, despite the downturn, knowing that for Sweden, imports and exports are its lifeblood.

Qantas says A380 aircraft are safe to fly after ‘serious’ incident

Monday, March 20th, 2017

Saturday, November 27, 2010

Australian airline Qantas has returned the first of its fleet of Airbus A380s to service, after all six of the “superjumbo” aircraft were grounded three weeks ago following one aircraft’s engine sustaining extensive midair damage; it landed safely in Singapore without injury. The airline stated that all of the aircraft have undergone extensive safety inspections and they are satisfied they are safe.

[It was] certainly the most serious incident that the A380 has experienced since it entered operations.

Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, said: “It’s great that we can reintroduce the aircraft. We are 100 percent comfortable with it. If we weren’t, we wouldn’t be restarting the operations today.” A spokesperson confirmed that tests had been performed “in close consultation with Rolls-Royce and Airbus” on the model’s Trent 900 engines. Qantas has replaced at least 14 engines, and modifications have been made to Trent 900s used by two other companies, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.

Experts said that the incident was embarrassing for Airbus; the airline’s shares have dropped by 7% since. Aviation journalist Tom Ballantyne said that the failure earlier this month was “certainly the most serious incident that the A380 has experienced since it entered operations.” The A380 made its first commercial flight in 2007, and is now in service with several other airlines, including Air France. It is the largest commercial passenger airliner in the world, with an 840-passenger maximum capacity, though Qantas’s can carry 450. There are reportedly plans to build a cargo version of the plane, which, aviation experts have suggested, would be the world’s first “triple-decker” freight aircraft; Airbus has not confirmed that this variant will be built.

The Benefits Of Email Marketing

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

By Trevor Richards

If you are running a business which has a prominent online presence then marketing will play a key part in making sales. As it has become easier for companies to get their business online, the low barriers to entry mean that there is now more competition than ever so you will have to be more focused in your marketing strategy in order to get your site noticed.

With this in mind there are various marketing channels which you could take advantage of. A highly effective marketing strategy is by making use of an email marketing campaign. This method of promotion is increasingly used as a main marketing strategy by leading online businesses. Email marketing is rapidly overtaking the more traditional direct mail marketing for several good reasons. When direct mail leaflets drop through the letterbox it is easy to simply dismiss them as unwanted junk without even bothering to read them. The benefit of email marketing is that more often than not your audience will have requested that you keep them updated with news about your products and services so you know that when a potential customer receives your email there will at least be a level of interest. It is for this reason that many companies are realising that email marketing is a useful way of making savings on their costs.

Another benefit of implementing such a marketing campaign is that the results are explicitly trackable so that you will be able to see how many customers are receiving your emails and more importantly – how many people are reading and then responding to them. Such feedback is simply not possible with traditional paper based direct marketing methods.

If you are deciding whether or not to invest in an email marketing campaign, an important factor to take into consideration is whether your audience are likely to use the internet regularly. Firstly they will need to be regular users so that they can become aware of your company and services in the first place and they will obviously also need to use the internet if they are to make purchases online.

It is also important to consider whether the benefits of the services and products which you provide can be adequately conveyed within an email. If for any reason the service is difficult to explain then it is highly unlikely that the customers on your email distribution list will be inclined to undertake research on their own time to find out more. Attention spans of internet users are extremely short so your email campaign should reflect this.

Another consideration to take into account is whether your company has the resources to implement and monitor an email monitoring campaign. If you feel that you will struggle to allocate a member of staff to the task then you may wish to approach a company who specialises in email campaign management as their expertise will be invaluable in ensuring that your email campaign delivers a return on your investment and helps your business to improve sales.

David S. Touretzky discusses Scientology, Anonymous and Tom Cruise

Wednesday, March 15th, 2017

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.
